3D printing is the latest innovation taking Dubai by storm. The UAE is known for being a pioneer in technological advancement with the first ever 3D printed building in the world launched in Dubai last year and the upcoming 3D printed skyscraper which is also a world first in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to make Dubai a ‘smart’ city.
What exactly is 3D printing? 3D printing is known as additive manufacturing, which refers to the process used to manufacture a three-dimensional object, where the layers of the object are formed under the control of a computer to produce an object. The object can be any size, shape or form and still be created using digital model data from a 3D model or a separate electronic data such as an additive manufacturing file, It can also be built through a computer-aided design (CAD).
Following the vision of His Highness and in-line with the CFD’s own vision to provide unparalleled fashion education to our students, we have added a new ZMorph 2.0 SX 3D printer to our ever-expanding innovation lab. Investing in state of the art academic equipment, technology and facilities is key to the student experience and enables them to learn hands-on expertise on their journey towards a career in fashion design or within the fashion industry.
The ZMorph is a highly versatile piece of equipment which can be used for a variety of projects from 3D printed jewellery molds to multi-material fabrication to 3D printed fashion, enabling you to design your own clothes, shoes, and accessories like never before. Fusing traditional materials with modern 3D printed elements creates clothing and fashion with a whole new edge.
Engineers from Zmorph visited the campus this week and engaged the students in a three-hour workshop on how to use the 3D printers effectively and efficiently. All students are thrilled to have access to such equipment and look forward to taking advantage of this throughout their studies.
